Around 3 million people in the UK are diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Kidney disease is common, can affect anyone, and there is no cure. Kidney failure is also fatal without dialysis or a transplant. It can impact many aspects of a person’s life including jobs, personal relationships and social life.
Living with kidney failure is far from easy. That’s why Kidney Care UK, the country’s leading kidney care patient support charity, provides assistance to thousands of people with kidney disease every year. In 2017, this fantastic charity invested over £2.1 million to support kidney patients and their families, providing patient grants, advice, guidance and support, and short holidays and respite breaks.
We were privileged to work with Kidney Care UK to deliver a fun and memorable residential experience at Mount Cook Adventure Centre, with patients joining us from all over the UK. The objective of this residential was to help those young people and adults develop their self-belief, and say: “I can.” The group stayed at Mount Cook for 3 nights and participated in a range of adventurous outdoor activities, including High Ropes, Canoeing, Rock Climbing and Abseiling. It was our mission to provide a life-changing experience for these patients, allowing them to leave Mount Cook with increased self-confidence and independence. Along the way, the young people and adults were able to meet people who were going through the same experiences as them, and make new friends. We look forward to welcoming Kidney Care UK to our centre again in 2019!
