August Blog: Space Inclusive

Last week we welcomed a fantastic group called Space Inclusive to our Centre. This social enterprise, based in the East Midlands, is committed to improving the lives and prospects of people with learning difficulties and additional needs. By offering practical real-life based activities and inspirational opportunities, Space Inclusive helps their young adults in their transition from school or college into a sustainable adult life.

Space Inclusive supports their young people in three main areas: employment, skills for living and social skills. The person-centred programme delivered at Mount Cook offered the group of young people the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, which helped to broaden their horizons, give everyone a sense of achievement and improve confidence and self esteem.

Space Inclusive's website says: "We are committed to small group working as we firmly believe that being around other people helps develop social skills and strategies to manage and improve relationships. Space Inclusive actively promote healthy lifestyles, we encourage safe, appropriate relationships including all aspects of sexual health."

Space Inclusive Communications Worker, James Green, kindly wrote the following article about their three day residential:

"Our clients have just had a fabulous few days of activity at the Mount Cook Adventure Centre in Derbyshire.

Mount Cook is located in the Derbyshire Dales, not too far away from Matlock and a stone’s throw away from the Peak District.

It’s very new – having only opened in July 2016 – but already has a great reputation for providing access to the outdoors and outdoor activities for all!

Clients from all three of our sites, Pelham Road, Mansfield Woodhouse and Sherwood enjoyed their visit.

Activities included archery, bushcraft, guided walking, team challenges and watersports.

Our Senior Support Worker, Brie, said “Everybody had a really enjoyable time. It was good in building independence and building friendships as well.”

In the evening there were more fun activities, from a campfire to a film night and a disco.

The trips were a fantastic opportunity for clients from different sites to meet and make friends with each other. It was also a chance for staff from different sites to meet and work together.

Our thanks go to all the staff at Mount Cook."

It was a privilege to work with Space Inclusive. They were such a happy and enthusiastic group, bursting with energy and excitement.

All of us at Space Inclusive would like to thank you and your staff for making our time at Mount Cook so enjoyable.
The activities provided were brilliant and it definitely showed that the needs and requirements of those attending were taken into account when they were planned. We all thought that your staff team were great and made those that attended feel at ease in new surroundings.
The facilities and food were great and everywhere was kept clean and tidy from when we arrived until the end of our stay. Overall it couldn’t have gone better and we look forward to our next residential with you!
