Inspirational Schools: Morley's Gigantic Triathlon!

Welcome to our first inspirational schools blog!

Each month, we will be highlighting the fantastic work done by pupils and teaching staff from primary and secondary schools across the UK and the world. This could include enhancing classroom teaching in an imaginative way, raising money for school trips and new experiences, or displaying an exemplary attitude to education, the environment or health and fitness.

This month we have visited Morley Primary in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, to learn more about their Gigantic Triathlon!

The Gigantic Triathlon project was first thought of by Mrs Rhodes, the school Bursar, who was eager to come up with a new and imaginative idea to raise money for school trips and experiences, whilst encouraging the pupils to engage in a variety of sports.

The primary's pupils, parents, staff, governors and even local sportsmen and celebrities ran, swam and cycled their way from Morley in Derbyshire to their sister establishment, Morley primary in Perth, Australia!

The target was to reach 9000 miles in just 3 weeks, with each pupil aiming to cover 25 miles a week. The school 'flew' over 18 different countries on their journey to Perth. Everyday in assembly the pupils mapped their progress using Google Earth, and identified which country they were currently in.

The event was launched on the 15th May with the arrival of static bikes. The pupils and parents were thrilled when Rammie, the Derby County mascot, joined them at the school and hopped on a bike to help them cover some extra miles! On the 4th June, the entire school took part in the Derby Junior Ramathon, a 2 mile run. Followed by a Shipley Park cycle ride on the 4th June. Finally, the pupils headed to William Gregg Leisure Centre where they completed the last leg of the journey and more! The whole event concluded with a well-deserved party for pupils, parents, staff and supporters.

Mrs Rhodes said: "On Saturday we had set ourselves the task of swimming the Channel, 22 miles, in William Gregg pool. We not only swam the Channel, we swam it back, and an extra 7 miles for good measure! A huge thank you to all the children and parents who joined us to swim.

The triathlon has been an amazing adventure. We have enjoyed getting fitter, seeing how far we had come each day, and of course, raising money to enable us to continue doing the things that makes our school special."

This fantastic school sporting event raised £2000! This money will go towards school trips and experiences, which will continue to enhance the education for the very lucky pupils at Morley Primary.
